Interns of the Business Design & Optimization Group are exceptional undergraduate and graduate students will a passion for project management and consulting. Each year a new cohort of students join the team and help to make a positive impact on the university and its constituents.
Current Interns
John Yang
Program: Economics, Financial Engineering
Undergraduate Lead Intern
John is a junior in the college from Shanghai, China. He is majoring in Economics and minoring in Computer Science. John possesses a keen interest in harnessing his combined proficiency in both business and engineering to facilitate effective communication between technical experts and business executives. This year, John is studying Financial Engineering at Columbia University in NYC as a part of a dual degree program from Georgetown and Columbia.
Ziwen Lu
Program: Master of Public Policy
Data Science Intern – GRAD 2024
Ziwen is a second-year graduate student at the McCourt School of Public Policy from Beijing, China. She is also a production assistant for the Department of Performing Arts. During the spring and summer, she served as a research assistant at the Georgetown Institute of Women, Peace, and Security, supporting index calculation based on data analysis and visualization skills. After graduation, Ziwen hopes to work as a research assistant or data analyst in a think tank or international organization. Ziwen likes to practice Chinese calligraphy and play table tennis in her free time, and she is also a big fan of video games. Her favorite sitcom is Community by Dan Harmon.
Ryka Mehra
Program: Economics
Undergraduate Intern
Ryka is a junior in the College from Mumbai, India, majoring in Economics with a minor in Psychology. On campus, she serves as the Director of Client Services at the Hilltop Microfinance Initiative, the USA’s largest student-run microfinance organization, where she helps marginalized entrepreneurs gain access to small business loans and financial coaching sessions. She is also a member of Georgetown Guzaarish, the university’s competitive South Asian fusion dance team. Outside of college, Ryka enjoys traveling, binge-watching TV shows, and learning new dance styles. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career in consulting that incorporates her interests in nonprofit leadership and development economics.
Thomas Moran
Program: International Economics
Undergraduate Intern
Thomas is a sophomore in the SFS originally from Cambridge, Minnesota. He is majoring in International Economics with minors in Statistics and German. On campus, he is an SFS Peer Advisor, a volunteer coordinator for Homeless Outreach Programs & Education (HOPE), and an analyst for Hoyalytics, Georgetown’s undergraduate data consulting club. This year, he is interning in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence through the State Department. After graduation, Thomas hopes to work at the intersection of Defense and Consulting. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring DC with friends, watching bad movies, and playing the OEC Tradle.
Sarah Liang
Program: Finance & Accounting
Undergraduate Intern
Sarah is a sophomore in the MSB from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is majoring in Finance and Accounting and minoring in Spanish. On campus, she is a part of Hoyalytics and will serve as a Project Manager this upcoming semester. She also enjoys playing badminton on Georgetown’s club team and is a leader for ESCAPE, a first-year retreat. In her free time, Sarah loves to bike, edit video montages, read, and go on night drives.
Ryan Liu
Program:Technology Management
Data Intern
Ryan is a second-year graduate student at the School of Continuing Studies from Guangzhou, China. Prior to Graduate Study, Ryan was studying at Pennsylvania State University majoring in Data Science, and he did a short internship in a startup company for financial analysis. Besides coursework, Ryan always focuses on proactive learning online to acquire more sophisticated skills and knowledge for preparation for his career in Data Science. After graduation, Ryan aims to work as a data analyst or data scientist in a tech or financial company. Ryan likes to play around with mechanical keyboards, play basketball, and hit the gym in his free time.
Carter Carlile
Program: Operations & Analytics and Management
Undergraduate Intern
Carter is from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and is a junior in the McDonough School of Business dual-majored in Operations & Analytics and Management. He has a passion for data analysis, enterprise strategy, and working closely with his team to create value for those he serves. In his free time, he enjoys playing pickleball, weightlifting, and eating burritos.
Wilson Leung
Program: Operations & Analytics and Marketing
Undergraduate Intern
Wilson is a junior in the MSB originally from Marlton, NJ. He is majoring in Operations & Analytics and Marketing. On campus, he serves as the Chief Agency Officer at the Georgetown Marketing Association and a senior consultant at Hilltop Consultants. Outside of work, he enjoys trying new restaurants, DJing events, and playing volleyball.
Bella Shi
Program: Master of Data Science and Analytics – GRAD 2025
Data Intern
Bella is a second-year graduate student from China, majoring in Data Science and Analytics. With a passion for data-driven insights, she aims to apply her analytical skills to solve real-world problems in industries ranging from tech to healthcare. Outside of her academic pursuits, Bella enjoys watching movies, traveling, hiking, and kayaking, which help her relax and explore the world around her.
Xueyi Tan
Program: Master of Data Science and Analytics – GRAD 2025
Data Intern
Xueyi is a second-year graduate student from China, passionate about applying her data analytics skills to solve real-life problems in both the public and private sectors. She is also a big fan of road trips and bubble tea and is excited to explore all the interesting spots in the DMV area.
